What can I do - my black wheeled bin for refuse isn't large enough! The black wheeled bins should be large enough for most families. You can minimise the amount of room your refuse takes up by:
We all have a duty to reduce the amount of waste we produce. Am I responsible for keeping my bin and refuse hygienic? The council hopes to be able to work with residents to provide a consistent, efficient and hygienic recycling and refuse collection service. Residents are responsible for the safe, hygienic storage of refuse up to the point of collection. There are products on the market to assist in keeping your bin healthy and smelling sweetly. Some private companies offer a cleaning service too. Where can I find out about future changes to these services? The council aims to ensure that major changes in services are adequately communicated to residents. Information is featured in the council's newspaper - The Borough Bulletin - and leaflets are delivered to affected properties. The local radio stations are also used for special changes (such as services affected by the weather) and of course there is the council's website and Twitter. You may also approach your councillor for information - they are happy to help with any queries and concerns that you may have. Despite all of these efforts, we acknowledge that a small proportion of residents may not be aware of changes and we apologise for this. Festive and Bank Holiday Arrangements The wheeled bin service operates from Tuesday to Friday therefore Bank Holiday Mondays do not effect the collection. Recycling and refuse collections will take place as normal on Good Friday. Please refer to your collection calendar in respect of Christmas and the New Year. I would like a reduction in my Council Tax. No reduction in Council Tax can be made for changes in service provision. Council Tax is a mandatory levy based on the occupation of property. Although income received from the levying of Council Tax does go towards paying for all of the services administered by the County, Borough and Parish Councils, payment may not be withheld, and neither does the Authority have the power to reduce the amount due because you are dissatisfied with or simply not receiving one or more services. Adverse Weather Conditions Adverse weather can easily disrupt the recycling and refuse collection services. We may be forced to suspend the service at short notice if the conditions on the roads and pavements become unsafe. Snow, ice and strong winds can all lead to suspension of services. Adverse weather is out of our control but we will endeavour to resume normal services as quickly as possible. How we catch up on missed collections will depend on a number of circumstances, but we will aim to give the black bin service a priority. Clinical Collection Service The Borough Council provides a collection service of clinical waste (i.e. medical, infectious waste). If this service is required then the health authority/district nurse will contact the council direct to make the appropriate arrangements. Disposal of needles and sharps boxes Residents using needles/sharps (ie diabetics) will be using a 'sharps container' for disposal. The council will arrange safe disposal of the 'sharp containers' however please note the following:
To obtain replacement containers you will need to see you medical practitioner since these items will require a prescription.
