Planning - high hedges
Overview
Some high evergreen hedges can cause problems to neighbouring properties by way of overshadowing. Some of the most frequently asked questions have been answered to help you resolve the problems you might have with hedges. Please use the 'Related FAQs' link on the right to find out more.
Please remember, however, that hedges have formed the framework to the local landscape since at least medieval times and that hedges also provide homes for nesting birds, insects and many of our most beautiful wildflowers not to mention small mammals, reptiles and amphibians.
Legislation to deal with the issue of high hedges came into force in 2005. Details of the legislation can be viewed in the 'Over the garden hedge' publication (Communities website).
