Changes to benefit from April 2017

Bereavement support payment (BSP)

Bereavement support payment (BSP) is a new payment for people whose spouse or civil partner dies on or after 06 April 2017 and replaces the following benefits that are paid by the Department for Works and Pensions:

  • Bereavement allowance
  • Widows pension
  • Widowed mother's pension
  • Widowed parent's allowance
  • Bereavement payment

If a person dies before 06 April 2017 a claim will need to be made for one of the above bereavement benefits even if a claim is made after 06 April 2017. Those people who are already on one of the above bereavement benefits will continue to receive them provided that they still qualify all the conditions to claim that benefit.

BSP is payable for a maximum of 18 months from the date of death. The difference with this new benefit and the previous bereavement benefits is that they would not have an end date as long as the conditions to claim that benefit were satisfied.
