Business rates on empty properties

Unoccupied listed buildings

Any property is exempt from unoccupied rates if it is subject to a building preservation order or is registered as a listed building under Section 54 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1971. (This information can be obtained from the planning department).

The exemption from unoccupied rates can be held indefinitely, until the property becomes occupied again or is removed from the non-domestic local rating list due to severe deterioration or demolition.
