Improving the historic environment

Red phone box and house

Hinckley and other settlements in the borough are fortunate to have retained a network of pedestrian routes known locally as jitties. These link the town centres with inner suburban areas where the historic hosiery factories, now often vacant or in other uses, are located. Broken windows, galvanised security fencing, and dark corners present an intimidating appearance, particularly in the evening.

The council has drawn on external funding to implement a programme of improvements and encourage greater use by residents and industrial heritage users.

New lighting, based on the traditional Leicestershire cast iron streetlights, has been installed; worn surfacing has been replaced with granite sets and old garden fences have been replaced with metal.
