How to pay council tax

Pay by direct debit

Direct debit - the easiest way to pay

Over 75% of households in the borough enjoy the flexibility and security that paying by direct debit gives.

You can pay annually, half-yearly or monthly. Unlike other methods of payment, those on direct debit can choose to pay on the 1st, the 15th or 28th of the month.

In a full year, the monthly instalments will normally be from April to January, however you can opt to pay your council tax over 12 instalments.

You are covered by the BACS direct debit guarantee.

Set up a direct debit online

Alternatively, you can telephone the Contact Centre on 01455 238141 during normal working hours and provide your bank details. Subject to certain safeguards, your direct debit will be set up immediately without having to complete any paperwork.

By completing the Direct Debit instruction, you accept that any arrears will be collected in one instalment on the next selected date unless they are subject to enforcement action, which includes attachment of earnings order; deductions from benefits, and cases with enforcement agents.

Alternatively, if you have arrears and wish to pay these by a payment arrangement, either:

  • Register for an online account which enables you to self-serve and create a payment arrangement (subject to certain conditions)
  • Contact Customer Services

If you intend to pay the council tax on someone else’s behalf as a third party payer, please contact Customer Services on 01455 238141
