The open register

About the register

Did you know there are two registers?

The Registration Officer keeps two registers - the electoral register and the open register (also known as the edited register).

The electoral register

The electoral register is the list of everyone who is registered to vote. If you are not on the electoral register, you will not be able to vote in elections and you will lose your opportunity to have your say about what goes on in your area.

The open register

The open register leaves out the names and addresses of people who have asked for their names to be excluded from that version of the register. The open register can be bought by anyone who asks for a copy and they may use it for any purpose.

Opt out of the open register: change your preference

You can choose not to have your details published on this register by 'opting out' when you register to vote. However if you are already registered you can change your opt-out preference at any time by making a request with your full name, address and an indication of whether you wish to be included or omitted from the open register.

You can do this in writing, by email or over the phone, we will also write to you to confirm any change.
