Benefits
What is a Non-dependant? A Non-dependant is a person aged 18 or over who lives in your home, or is using your home as their main residence. A Non-dependant does not have to be a family member. If I have a Non-dependant living in my household, will my benefit be affected? Yes, your benefit may be reduced due to a non-dependant deduction. You must let us know if somebody moves in or out of your home as it will affect your benefit. If you have a non-dependant that has a change in their circumstances, i.e, they change their job, have an increase or decrease in their earnings, income or capital, you must let us know within one month of the change. If your non-dependant is receiving any state benefits, we will also take these into account when assessing your claim. How is the deduction calculated? The Government sets a weekly deduction for each non-dependant based on their income. The more income that they have, the greater the non-dependant deduction will be from your benefit. If your non-dependant is working, on benefits or receiving a private pension, the charge will be based on their GROSS income. (Gross Income is the amount before any deductions such as Tax and National Insurance are taken). If we take a non-dependant deduction from your benefit, it will be taken from the Monday following the date that your non-dependant moved into the property or from the Monday following the date their income changed. Are there any cases where a non-dependant deduction is not made? Yes. Below is a list showing the main areas where a non-dependant deduction is not made:
Will I need to provide proof of my non-dependant's income? Yes we will need to see proof of your non-dependant's income. You must provide us with all the information we need within one month of telling us about your non-dependant. We will then recalculate your benefit using the the non-dependants income.
