Winner of Outdoor Market of the Year 2010
Hinckley Market was recently awarded the National Outdoor Market of the Year 2010 at the National Association of British Market Authorities (NABMA) awards, held in Birmingham. Hinckley beat outdoor markets all over the country to win this prestigious award, which was awarded on the strength of the management of the market, as well as our excellent market traders. Hinckley Market has gone from strength to strength in recent years, with an increase in stalls on all three days. The Friday market in particular has almost doubled in size over the last two or three years, when many other markets are in decline.

Our Markets
There are three markets held each week on Monday, Friday and Saturday in Hinckley Town Centre. If you would be interested in having a stall, please contact Gary Shepherd, Market Superintendent on 07966 201305. Gary will advise on stall availability and also whether the goods you want to sell would be suitable to maintain a balanced market.

Since April 2008, the council has encouraged traders to expand their businesses by offering multi-stall discounts, making it more affordable for traders to have larger stalls. The council has also purchased a number of smaller umbrella stalls to encourage small traders with homemade products to take a pitch. The cost of renting an umbrella stall is only £12 per day on a Saturday or £10 on a Monday or Friday.

Specialist Markets
Hinckley is planning to hold an auto-jumble on Sunday 19th September, to coincide with Triumph’s 20th Anniversary of manufacturing in Hinckley. The stalls will run all the way through the main streets of Hinckley. To book a stall download the form and send to Gary Shepherd on gary.shepherd@hinckley-bosworth.gov.uk or paula.padmore@hinckley-bosworth.gov.uk ,or post to Gary Shepherd, Council Offices, Argents Mead, Hinckley, Leicestershire LE10 1BZ. Alternatively contact Gary on 07966 201 305.

Getting started at Hinckley Market
Hinckley Market is a well balanced market consisting of 70 to 80 outdoor stalls run by Hinckley & Bosworth Borough Council. The market is kept well balanced by only allowing one or two of each line to be sold. So if you have any unusual products that we have no other trader selling please call Gary Shepherd on 07966201305. Alternatively you may apply for a stall by completing an electronic application for a stall. Please note that if you intend to sell food on the stall you will also need to apply for a licence to trade as a food establisment. This may also be done electronically by completing an application for approval of a food business establishment. You will not be able to sell food until this has been approved.

To start trading you will need £5,000,000 public liability and £10,000,000 employers liability insurance. Proof of this will need to be shown before trading commences. Stalls are provided and erected by Hinckley & Bosworth Borough Council. Sizes of the stalls are 10 feet wide and 11 feet deep with a tabletop serving area of 10 feet by 4 feet 6 inches. Top sheets are provided for traders to put on themselves. Back and side sheets can be used but must be clear and need to be supplied by the trader.

To help new traders get started we offer a half rent scheme for the first four weeks. The market has two rent zones, Zone 1 which are prime positions and Zone 2 which are secondary positions and attract half rent. Rents are collected on each day of trading by the market superintendent. The rent per stall for a casual trader is currently £31 on a Saturday for a prime position (£15.50 in zone 2) and £25.80 on a Monday or Friday for a prime position (£12.90 in zone 2).

A licence scheme is in operation and a casual trader who has traded with us for several months may be asked if they would like to apply. Rents will then be collected via invoice monthly.

If you are thinking of becoming a market trader, there are two websites which give lots of the information you would need. The first is the careers advice page at Directgov which gives some idea of what is involved in becoming a market trader. The second is the National Market Traders Federation site which also includes lots of useful information. Gary Shepherd, Market Superintendent would also be happy to advise you. Gary can be contacted on Mondays, Fridays or Saturdays on 07966 201305.

Regulation of Markets - Stall Rental and Charging

Code of Conduct (PDF, 68KB)
The council has recently adopted a code of conduct for both licensees and casual traders, using best practice recommended by NABMA (The National Association of British Market Authorities). This took effect from 1 July and is for the benefit of all traders and the Borough Council. This means that any issues that arise from the market between traders, customers and the council will be dealt with according to the code of conduct.
