Hinckley & Bosworth Borough Council

Don’t get caught out – make sure you are on the Electoral Register

Published 27 August 2010

RESIDENTS in Hinckley and Bosworth are being urged to safeguard their chance to vote in next year’s Borough Council election by registering this autumn.

The plea comes at the start of the annual canvass, when local authorities in Great Britain deliver electoral registration forms to all households. The Borough Council election will take place next May and there is also the possibility of a national referendum. To vote in the election, or referendum, eligible electors must be on the electoral roll.

All households in the borough should have received a voter registration form from the Borough Council by now. It lists all the people who are currently on the electoral register for the address. Electors are asked to simply add anyone who should be registered and isn't on the list and cross out anyone who no longer lives at the address.

Children under the age of 16 should not be included but anyone who will be 18 by 30 November 2011 should be added. The form should be signed and returned to the council as soon as possible.

Yvonne Hughes, Electoral Services Officer said:

The reality is an election or referendum can be called at any time. If you aren't on the electoral roll, you will miss out on the chance to have your say on how the country is run or how services are provided in Hinckley and Bosworth. You aren't automatically registered if you pay council tax or if you have registered before.

Registering to vote is very simple. Either fill in the form that will have come through your door or contact us at the council on 01455 238141 if you haven't received one. Once you've filled in the form, make sure you send it to us as soon as possible by using the pre-paid envelope supplied. If there are no changes to be made to the details shown you can register by freephone, via the internet, or by SMS text using the details supplied on the form.
