Making a homeless application

Homeless prevention

We have a dedicated Housing Options Team to advise on preventing homelessness. There are many reasons why someone may face homelessness such as:

  • Being served notice
  • Being asked to leave by family or friends
  • Rent or mortgage arrears
  • Unsuitable property or in poor repair
  • Fear of violence
  • Harassment
  • Leaving hospital or other care

Our first priority is to endeavour to keep a tenant in their home if it is safe and reasonable to do so. This may involve liaising with the person asking you to leave, checking the validity of any legal notices, helping to make an affordable payment plan or referring for other help and assistance such as budgeting advice. If this intervention is not successful, then there are tools or options that can be considered, such as a referral to a hostel, a payment from the prevention fund to subject for eligibility, arranging accommodation with an alternative family member or friend. It is important to get help as soon as possible.

Many tenants, both in the private sector and social housing have been affected by welfare reforms also referred to as the bedroom tax, under occupancy charge, the benefit cap and universal credit. If you are experiencing difficulties you can find more information on universal credit (GOV.UK)

If you are a council or housing association tenant and you are having difficulty with your rent due to the welfare reform, please speak to your tenancy management officer at an early stage. You may also need to see a housing options officer for further assistance. There are a range of options you may wish to consider, including help to make a household budget, considering moving to a smaller or more affordable property or a discretionary housing payment.

If you are living in a private rented property, please speak to a member of the Housing Options Team by either attending one of the drop in surgeries or calling 01455 238141 and asking for housing options.
