In March 2017 Markfield Parish Council submitted an application to designate a neighbourhood area in order to prepare a Neighbourhood Development Plan to cover the whole area of Markfield Parish. A six week public consultation on whether this was an appropriate area to designate for the purpose of undertaking a Neighbourhood Development Plan ended on 14 April 2017.
Following the consultation, the Borough Council has formally designated the Markfield Neighbourhood Area for the purpose of producing a Neighbourhood Development Plan.
A Neighbourhood Development Plan can establish general planning policies for the development and use of land in a neighbourhood area, such as where new homes or employment should be located, what they should look like and what important services should be protected. It can be detailed or general, depending on what local people want.
A Neighbourhood Development Plan provides an avenue by which local communities can guide development for their local area, however it must still meet the needs of the wider area. This means that a Neighbourhood Development Plan must take into account and be in accordance with the strategic policies of the Borough Council’s Local Plan 2006-2026.
