Apprenticeship testimonials

Michael's testimonial

Michael, 30, from Hinckley is our Finance Apprentice:

I completed my GCSE’s and A-levels and then spent seven years serving in the Royal Air Force. I decided I wanted a career change so it was either university or an apprenticeship. I decided to go for an apprenticeship that includes spending one day a week at college studying the Association of Accounting Technician (AAT) qualification.

I completed my Level 3 Assistant Accountant apprenticeship here with the council last year and decided to sign on again for my Level 4. As a mature student I really didn’t want to incur large debts in the form of university fees, as an apprentice I am able to earn money, gain my AAT qualification and also get valuable work experience as I study.

I am in the office four days a week and get involved in all aspects of the finance function, including working with the income team helping solve customer queries, helping the accountants with various reconciliations, and learning about how we prepare our annual financial statements. I’m really enjoying my time with the council and everyone here supports me and helps with my studies when I get stuck on something.  Working, learning and taking exams is a big challenge but one that will ultimately set me up brilliantly for the future. Whenever anyone asks me if its worth doing an apprenticeship I always say yes definitely, find the subject you enjoy and go for it!
