Proms in the Park returns

Hollycroft Park was filled with music and celebration as the much-loved Proms in the Park returned for another successful evening.

Organised by the Borough Council, the free open-air concert saw more than 50 talented young musicians from the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire Wind Orchestra deliver a rousing programme of well-known classics. 

Under the direction of conductor Douglas Mitchell and Ryan Bunce, the audience enjoyed a traditional Proms finale, complete with much-loved favourites including Jerusalem and Land of Hope and Glory.

The orchestra was joined in the second half by prize-winning soloist Rose Johnson, whose performance added to what was a vibrant and memorable event.

Attendees made the most of the evening, bringing picnics and deck chairs, while local partners including Friends of Hollycroft Park and the Royal British Legion Hinckley Branch helped create a lively and welcoming atmosphere.

Council Leader, Cllr Stuart Bray, said: “Proms in the Park was a fantastic evening, bringing our community together to enjoy music and celebration in our award-winning park.

“My thanks go to the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire Wind Orchestra, Douglas Mitchell, Ryan Bunce and Rose Johnson for such outstanding performances and to everyone who came along and made it such a success.”

Borough Council Chief Executive Bill Cullen said: “Another fabulous evening and my thanks in particular go to our events team who put so much planning and attention into the evening.”

New rules for landlords and tenants 

Landlords and tenants who let and rent in England should be aware that new legislation came into force on 1 May 2026, bringing in significant changes designed to make renting fairer, more secure and more predictable. 

Under the Renters’ Rights Act 2025, tenants now have stronger protections and greater stability in their homes.

What are some of the rules that have changed?

• No more 'no-fault' evictions – landlords must now give a valid reason and strictly follow correct legal proceedings to regain possession
• All tenancies are rolling – fixed end dates have effectively been removed
• Tenants can usually leave with two months’ notice
• Rent increases are limited to once per year, and can be challenged
• Landlords cannot demand more than one month’s rent in advance
• Tenants can request to keep a pet, which landlords must reasonably consider
• Landlords cannot discriminate against whom they let to, such as families or people in receipt of benefits

Landlords must still:

• Keep properties safe and in good repair
• Deal with issues like damp, leaks, heating and safety checks
• Give at least 24 hours’ notice before visiting (except in emergencies)
• Landlords must also provide to their tenants by 31 May 2026 a copy of ‘The Renters’ Rights Act Information Sheet 2026’ or where no previous written tenancy agreement is in place, landlords must provide certain written information about key terms of the tenancy instead

Significant fines can be issued to those who fail to comply.

Tenants must continue to:

• Pay rent on time
• Look after the property
• Report repairs promptly
• Follow their tenancy agreement

Tributes paid to former Mayor

Tributes have been paid to a former Mayor of Hinckley and Bosworth and long-serving councillor who has died aged 89.

Rita Aldridge served as a Conservative councillor for a total of 24 years, first representing Barwell ward from 1983 to 1995 and then representing Cadeby, Carlton and Market Bosworth ward from 1999 to 2011. Mrs Aldridge was Mayor of Hinckley and Bosworth from 1989 – 1990.

Borough Council Chief Executive Bill Cullen said: “I was very saddened to hear of the passing of Rita Aldridge. She worked tirelessly for people across the borough and in particular the local communities in the wards she represented. 

“Rita will be remembered fondly for her dedication, her cross-party working, humour and service. My heartfelt condolences go to her family and loved ones.”
