Have your say on the Mallory Park request to vary noise abatement notice schedule

Mallory Park request for variation to noise abatement notice schedule

What was it about?

In 2014, the council issued a new noise abatement notice (NAN) which restricts noise nuisance from the Mallory Park Racing Circuit.

The principle of the NAN is to control the frequency and level of noise nuisance, not to prevent noise. The NAN sets out several categories of days when motor vehicles are used with different maximum noise levels for each. It sets out the number of those days that can take place each year and also specifies conditions which restrict hours of motor vehicle activities. The NAN also contains a condition that allows the operator to seek a variation to the conditions.

The council has considered a number of requests from the operator to vary the conditions since the NAN was introduced, the latest being earlier this year, and each time the council has sought views from the local community prior to making a decision on those requests. If the council has agreed to the variation it has always been on a 12 month basis to allow time to assess the impact of the change before being allowed on longer term basis. Some of the variations have been agreed each year for the last three years.

The operators of the racing circuit, Real Motorsport Ltd (RML) have now written to the council and have requested a permanent continuation of the variations agreed earlier this year; an amendment to the definition of a weekend to include bank holiday Fridays and a further variation to hold an additional 12 non-competitive midweek events throughout the year. The operators have advised that they are not requesting further weekend racing activities.

How you could get involved

From 7 December 2021 to 4 January 2022, we asked residents within Kirkby Mallory to view the application by Mallory Park for the variations and have their say on the variation request by completing our response form.

In addition to the response form, the racetrack operators hosted a drop-in session at the race course on 14 December 2021 between 4pm and 7pm for residents to speak to them directly about the proposals and find out any more information.
