Four new EV charging points coming to Hinckley Leisure Centre car park
Work to install four new electric vehicle charging points at Hinckley Leisure Centre car park will get under way on Monday 21 September.
Visitors are being advised to allow extra time for parking while the improvements are carried out.
The new Electric Vehicle Solar Canopy Charging Hub will be installed in the leisure centre car park as part of a county-wide initiative to expand access to electric vehicle charging infrastructure across Leicestershire.
The project has been made possible through funding secured from the Government's Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) Fund, which supports local authorities in delivering the charging network needed to meet growing demand for electric vehicles.
Four new solar-powered electric vehicle charging points will be added, including two accessible bays for disabled users.
The work is expected to last around six weeks. To ensure the work can be carried out safely, a section of the leisure centre car park will be temporarily unavailable throughout the project and there will be a short period of total closure.
Leisure centre users are encouraged to plan ahead, allow additional time for parking, and consider using nearby town centre car parks if the leisure centre car park is busy. Members are reminded that their car park permits are also valid in Castle Car Park.
The Borough Council already provides 46 EV charging points across its car parks in Hinckley, Earl Shilton, Market Bosworth and Barwell, with details available on the council's website.
Council Leader Councillor Stuart Bray said: "These new charging points are another important step in building the infrastructure residents and visitors need as more people have or switch to electric vehicles.
"While there will inevitably be some temporary disruption during the installation works, the long-term benefits will be significant. I would encourage anyone visiting the leisure centre over the coming weeks to allow themselves a little extra time and consider alternative parking options if necessary."
Councillor Martin Cartwright, Executive Member for Climate Change, said: "Expanding our charging network is a practical investment in the borough's greener future and makes it easier for residents and visitors to choose cleaner, more sustainable transport.
"Following the installation of solar panels at the leisure centre in 2025, this latest project reinforces our commitment to reducing carbon emissions, supporting sustainable travel and helping us move towards our net zero ambitions."
