Hinckley highway improvements set to begin

On behalf of Leicestershire County Council

Work to boost Hinckley town centre is set to begin on Sunday (July 12).

Leicestershire County Council will be making improvements to the Station Road area as part of a wider £5.54m scheme to support economic growth and improve the transport network in and around the town.

Over the summer work will take place to make the area more attractive, safer and easier for people to walk, cycle or use public transport.

Initial work will see a southbound closure along Station Road – vehicles will be allowed to travel north to Church Walk, but will be directed back through the Market Place and along Regent Street.

Peter Osborne, county council cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “This is an exciting scheme which complements regeneration work taking place in Hinckley.

“It will not only boost the appearance of the area in a bid to support trade, but will also tackle road safety by creating a safer environment that supports walking, cycling and the use of public transport.

“The bulk of this work will take place in the summer holidays, when the schools are off and traffic is lighter, and we’d like to thank people in advance for their patience while this work is carried out.”

The council has worked with Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council on the scheme’s design and the completion of work is due to coincide with the completion of The Crescent and new leisure centre projects.

Bill Cullen, deputy chief executive of Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council, said: "This is a major public realm scheme for Station Road which will significantly enhance this key link to the heart of Hinckley’s shopping centre.

“It will also knit together the flagship Crescent shopping and leisure scheme with Hinckley’s premier shopping street Castle Street. This scheme will be managed in a way that continues to provide  access to the town’s short stay carparks and  to help to minimise disruption. It is important that these works are completed by November to ensure maximum benefit is achieved for all businesses in the town centre for when the Crescent opens.”

The scheme includes:
  • Public realm works, including reconstructing the pavements with block paving and providing heritage style street lighting
  • Speed tables
  • A section of shared use footway/ cycleway around the southern end of Station Road with Toucan Crossing (pedestrian/ cyclist signalised crossing), aimed at making it easier for cyclists to travel safely between Station Road and Southfield Road / the Train Station
  • Raised bus stop access kerbs at existing / re-sited bus stops, aimed at making it easier for passengers
The Station Road southbound closure will last for several weeks and further closures will take place during the summer.
