The final phase of work to enhance Station Road in Hinckley town centre as part of a multi-million pound programme to improve the transport network is now well underway.
The initial phase of improvement works to Station Road - featuring new conservation lighting and high quality paving materials – took place during the summer. Those works were funded by Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council through developer contributions in order to improve pedestrian links between Castle Street and The Crescent, the new multi-million pound retail and cinema development that is nearing completion in Hinckley town centre. Now the final phase of pavement and highway improvements works that will help to make the Station Road area more attractive, safer and easier for people to walk, cycle or use public transport is underway as part of a wider £5.54m scheme by Leicestershire County Council to support economic growth. Road users are reminded there is a temporary one-way system in operation on Station Road until 18 November (southbound from Lancaster Road) to keep traffic flowing during the works, with side road closures only as and when required for the safety of the works and management of traffic.
Additionally, road users are reminded of upcoming road closures for resurfacing works:
- Sunday 18 October – Station Road is closed from the junction of Lancaster Road to the junction with Mount Road. There will be no access to Church Walk or St Mary’s Road car parks during this closure. The nearest alternative car park is Mount Road, with access to the town centre and St Mary’s Church via Argents Mead
- Saturday 24 October – Station Road is closed from south of the junction with St Mary’s Road to the junction with Mount Road. All town centre car parks remain open and access to Church Walk and St Mary’s Road car parks, Station Road businesses and St Mary’s Church is via Lancaster Road
- Sunday 25 October – The junction of Station Road/Lancaster Road to St Mary’s Road is closed for resurfacing. There will be no access to Church Walk or St Mary’s Road car parks during this closure. The nearest alternative car park is Mount Road, with access to the town centre and St Mary’s Church via Argents Mead
Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times and traffic marshals will be on site to assist drivers and pedestrians during these resurfacing works.
Resurfacing works have been scheduled to take place during half term week in a bid to minimise disruption. Works will be completed to the Lancaster Road to Mount Road stretch of Station Road in order to enable that section to reopen to two-way traffic when schools return on Monday 26 October. Works to the remaining section of Station Road will be completed and the whole of Station Road will be reopened to two-way traffic in time for the Hinckley Christmas lights switch on and Tin Hat Fair on 20 November.
