Health and active lifestyle scheme

Introduction to the scheme

The key partners that work together to develop the Exercise Referral Scheme and Heartsmart scheme are:

  • Hinckley & Bosworth Borough Council
  • Places for People
  • Sport in Desford
  • Public Health

The scheme began in 2001, looking at the development of the GP Referral Scheme. Based at Hinckley Leisure Centre, it started by running three supervised sessions per week and achieved 63 referrals in its first year. The scheme has been a great success story and the number of referrals has increased substantially every year since it began, to over 700 referees in 2015.

The scheme no longer offers just the referral sessions but also offers:

  • Heartsmart
  • Chair based exercise
  • Older people’s exercise group
  • Macmillan’s physical activity group for those affected by cancer

  • Walking for health
