How to rent
Renting information
The government have produced a guide for tenants and landlords in the private rented sector called how to rent (GOV.UK). If you are a tenant or a landlord, this guide will help you understand your rights and responsibilities. It provides a checklist and more detailed information on each stage of the process, including:
- What to look out for before renting
- Living in a rented home
- What happens at the end of a tenancy
- What to do if things go wrong
It’s now a legal requirement for landlords to give their tenants the latest version of the 'how to rent' guide at the start of their tenancy.
The following are also all applicable in rented accommodation. Many more new requirements are also on their way through the Renters' Rights Act 2025:
- The Tenant Fees Act 2019 (GOV.UK)
- Electrical safety regulations (GOV.UK)
- Minimum energy efficiency standards guidance for domestic landlords (GOV.UK)
