Smoking ban enforcement
What the law means
Since the 1 July 2007 the Health Act 2006 made virtually all enclosed public places and workplaces in England smoke free by law in order to protect people from the effects of second hand smoke.
- Smoking is prohibited in 'enclosed' and 'substantially enclosed' parts of virtually all public places and workplaces. This includes shops, offices, factories, restaurants, pubs, bars and clubs
- Smoking is also prohibited in vehicles used for public transport. This includes buses, trains and taxis
- Smoking is also prohibited at all times in a vehicle used for work by more than one person, regardless of whether they are in the vehicle at the same time
- Exemptions are limited and relate to private dwellings, designated bedrooms in hotels and specified areas of other residential accommodation, such as prisons and care homes
