Trees - Our duties as a council
Tree issues we investigate
Trees in contact with private property
If a tree touches a private property, we will take appropriate steps to resolve the issue:
- This often involves pruning the tree
- When pruning, our goal is to prevent the problem from reoccurring for at least three years
- In some cases, it may be more appropriate to remove the tree entirely
Overhanging branches at private properties
Overhanging branches may be addressed through our general tree maintenance programme. This programme is managed at the council's discretion and depends on available funding.
Fruit trees
Fruit trees are valued for their ability to provide free food and are welcome in many areas:
- We may take action to reduce or remove fallen fruit, berries, or nuts on pavements or private property
- This includes trees such as apple, cherry, and pear
- We consider the potential for such issues when deciding which trees to plant
Trees and telephone wires
We may prune trees to reduce or eliminate interference with telephone wires, but only when pruning is effective.
In many cases, wires can pass through trees with little or no disruption.
Often, utility wires are installed after the trees have already been planted.
Anti-social behaviour relating to trees
If issues arise regarding anti-social behaviour involving trees, we may consider a phased removal and replacement with a more suitable species.
When a tree is associated with criminal or anti-social activity, we will investigate and take action. This may involve working with multiple agencies, including the police.
Pruning or removing a tree is not always the solution. Research suggests that areas with more trees can actually be safer.
Neglected areas
Unmaintained areas, such as those with overgrown trees or general untidiness, can encourage crime or anti-social behaviour.
Trees blocking security equipment
Requests to prune or remove trees that block security cameras or sensors must come from an appropriate statutory body, such as the police, on public safety grounds:
- We do not prune or fell trees solely to improve visibility, range, or camera coverage
- It is the responsibility of the property owner to install security systems in a way that avoids tree-related interference
