Ecological interests
Hill Hole Quarry is a regionally important geological site (RIGs) for the exposed markfieldite (granite). The meadow to the north was designated as a wildlife site and it was classed as a site of importance for nature conservation (SINC). The exposed rock faces and heath grassland are priority habitats, biodiversity action plans (BAPs). From ecological surveys undertaken in the past, the following have been identified:
- Various lichens
- Fungi (for example, puffballs)
- An assortment of flowering plants from trees to a wild flower meadow
- A variety of ferns
There is also an assortment of invertebrates including:
- Spiders
- Shrimps
- Crayfish
- Insects
