How to apply for a Hackney carriage or private hire drivers licence

Knowledge tests

The test is taken by both Hackney carriage and private hire driver applicants and is required to ensure that legal requirements are met. The cost of the test is included as part of the application fee.

A driver must show how they will take a passenger to their destination by the shortest possible route. Also, a knowledge of the Highway Code and numeracy is important. The use of maps or mobile phones while you are taking the test is not allowed.

Questions will include a selection of routes between various points within the district and locations of places of entertainment, refreshment and domestic addresses.
