Nappies - making an informed choice

Baby Daniel's story

Mother and baby with cloth nappies

Baby Daniel is a happy little chappy in his nappy. This is his story:

There was a time, while I was in mummy's tummy, when I heard muffled talking about which sort of nappies were best for me. You see, my mummy likes to look after the planet so she started researching real nappies. She found out that 95 disposable nappies are thrown away every second of every day in the UK; most of these are buried in landfill. Wow! My daddy likes to look after the pennies - he found out that he would have to spend around £1,000 if I wore disposables and only around £200 if I used washables. For once they agreed on something.

Mummy also got in touch with the local council and they explained that in Leicestershire there is a £30 cash back scheme for babies using real nappies. All the paper work was sorted and the refund arrived in the post, this made my new nappies even cheaper!

Well, I was born in December and I love my new nappies. Having looked at all the alternatives mummy and daddy chose something called a one-size nappy. Mummy says that as I grow, they will grow with me - so mummy doesn't need to buy different sizes. All that matters to me is that they are really comfy; they fit nice and snug around my legs so stop any leaks, and have poppers at the front to make them small enough for me.

I have 25 nappies, in five lovely colours. Mummy puts them in the washing machine every other day during the cheap electric time when I am asleep at night. She's really pleased with them because they are really soft and they soon dry, even without a tumble dryer.

My sister, Emily, is five. She helps mummy fold my nappies up and chooses which colour I am going to wear next. Even daddy can work them!

Mummy tells all her friends that my real nappies have no chemicals in. This means they are better for my skin and the environment.

So, thank you mummy and daddy for thinking about my bottom and doing your best to look after the planet so I have a better future.

Lots of love
Baby Daniel xxx

Please note, Leicestershire County Council no longer offer the £30 cash back scheme.
