Zoo licence

Licence summary

If you operate a zoo in the borough, you will need a licence from the council to ensure the proper conduct of the zoo.

  • At least two months before making an application for a licence, you must give notice in writing to the council (you can email us) of your intention to make the application. At this time you must also publish notice of the intention in one local newspaper and one national newspaper and put on display a copy of that notice at the site.
  • A visit will be made to the establishment by a vet appointed by the council and up to two vets appointed by Central Government.
  • The vets will report on the suitability of the zoo, accommodation care and well being of the animals, staffing and management standards, educational and value and health and safety considerations.

Applications to renew a licence will be considered no later than six months before the expiry of the existing licence.
