Selling or Supplying Alcohol

You must have the appropriate authorisation to sell or supply alcohol under the Licensing Act 2003.

A licence may be required even if the alcohol is described to be free. For example, a licence is likely to be needed if:

•    Alcohol is included in the price of a ticket or admission fee
•    Alcohol is provided at a charity or fundraising event where guests pay to attend
•    A complimentary alcoholic drink is offered as part of the purchase of a product or service

In these situations, the alcohol may be regarded as being sold for the purposes of licensing law.

If you wish to sell or supply alcohol to members of the public, guests, or club members, you will usually need one of the following:

•    A premises licence
•    A club premises certificate
•    A temporary event notice (TEN)

Depending on the circumstances, a personal licence may also be required.
