Major incident update: Efforts continue round the clock on gas outage

Published Wednesday, 31 January 2024

Issued by Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland Local Resilience Forum:

Residents in Ratby and parts of Kirby Muxloe continue to be visited by Cadent engineers in efforts to safely fix the gas supply, as parts of the area have had their gas supply restored.

Today (Wednesday) help centres in Ratby and Kirby Muxloe are open and more volunteers are being mobilised to visit households and give advice.

In addition, a range of warm spaces have opened to welcome people, including Ratby library, some shops and local pubs.

With help being targeted at the most vulnerable, residents are being asked to look out for people who might need extra help.

Three leisure centres have also offered their shower facilities for use. Enderby Leisure Centre, New Parks Leisure Centre and Leicester Leys will be available to use. Residents should tell reception they are from Ratby or Kirby Muxloe for access.

People can contact their district council on 01455 238141 (for Ratby) or 0116 275 0555 (for Kirby Muxloe). An additional source of advice is the county council’s First Contact Plus team on: 0116 305 4286.
For incident updates, Cadent’s dedicated web page provides up to date advice.

Last night, cooking and heating appliances were provided by the Cadent team. Almost 1,000 heaters were given out to residents. The advice from the National Grid remains to use appliances carefully to avoid too much demand on the electricity supply.

Richard Sansom, Network Director for Cadent in the East Midlands, said:

I’m pleased to report that we have restored gas to the area of Zone 4 and work is underway to reconnecting gas to homes in that area. I’d urge people not to attempt to restore gas themselves or turn their meters on themselves. This must be done by a gas safe registered engineer and we will be sending a Cadent engineer round to do this for you.

We are currently restoring gas to the area of Zone 3 and we hope to be able to start reconnecting gas to homes in that area later on today.

Please head to our website Cadent gas network Ratby (cadentgas.com) to find out what Zone you are in. We will provide regular updates on there as soon as we have them. Thank you again for your patience and support.”
Tom Purnell, Vice-Chair of the Leicestershire Resilience Forum, said: “Agencies have come together to support residents in Ratby and Kirby Muxloe, and our focus remains the vulnerable and people who need to keep warm as temperatures remain low.

We’re also urging people to ensure anyone knocking on their door has the appropriate identification. All agencies working will be wearing identification.

Please continue to follow the advice of Cadent. Their online updates and team on the ground is working round the clock to ensure everyone is up to date on the latest situation.
