Groundbreaking video game, TV and film artist to be honoured at Atkins Gallery
Two-time BAFTA-winning artist and animator Brett Jones will be celebrated with a memorial art exhibition at the Atkins Gallery in Hinckley this November.
Jones was a pioneer of groundbreaking video game technology around the turn of the millennium through his work at Rare Ltd, creating the famous GoldenEye and Perfect Dark games. He won BAFTAs for Game of the Year in 1997 and 2000.
He later moved into television, working on Dr Who and a plethora of other top shows in his roles as a 3D generalist, concept artist and animator.
Then came a break in the film industry, with Jones again lending his skills to Hollywood hits like Guardians of the Galaxy, Fast and Furious 6, The Mummy, and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
The exhibition will feature Jones' art and is a tribute to his love of iconic shows like The Avengers, Dr Who, Star Trek, X-Files and Red Dwarf. Also, on display will be some of Jones' never-before-seen concept art, personal objects and an interview recorded before his death in July 2024.
Cllr Mark Bools, Deputy Leader of Hinckley & Bosworth Borough Council, said: “Brett Jones was a talented creative mind who spanned many great industries and projects. His portfolio of work and the awards he won speak for themselves, and it is an honour to be showcasing his work at the Atkins Gallery.”
Jones and his wife, Annie Lindup, set up the not-for-profit Sci-Fi Ball, a three-day science fiction convention which has been running since 1994. All profits from the convention, totalling £72,000 to date, are donated to the Teenager Cancer Trust.
'Painting Icons, inside the art of Brett Jones' will be exhibited at the Atkins Gallery between 4 November and 15 November.
The Atkins Gallery is open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, with a Saturday preview of the exhibition on 2 November (11:30am to 3pm). Look out for additional weekend and evening openings on the Atkins Building website and social media accounts.
