The Art of Music Exhibition comes to Atkins Gallery

The Atkins Gallery in Hinckley is excited to present a new exhibition titled 'The Art of Music'.
This collection features works from 22 local artists, showcasing over 65 pieces that include paintings, illustrations, and sculptures, all inspired by themes ranging from Pink Floyd to Hilda Von Bingen. The exhibition is open until 8 August.
The exhibition will showcase local music stories from both the past and present. Hinckley & District Museum is contributing items from their collection; local archivist Mervin Wallace is sharing his research on bands that performed at the St George’s Ballroom in the 1960s.
Additionally, Hinckley Unitarians are providing objects from their archive related to Hugh Atkins of the well-known Atkins hosiery family and the music he composed for the Great Meeting Chapel, along with a retrospective on music shops in Hinckley.
Grant Decker from Vinyl Shakedown Records has put together a display of vinyl records featuring local bands and musicians.
Locally based Keysound Music Shop will also be lending materials that tell their story and their experience trading in Hinckley.
In addition, during the exhibition visitors will also be able to enjoy:
- Connect with Leicestershire Recovery College, Thursday 17 July, 10am – 1pm.
The Leicestershire Recovery College recognise that music is therapeutic to many and will visit to promote their mental health resources and educational courses:
- A lunchtime recital by Castle Baroque Players, Wednesday 6 August 12:30-1.30pm
Introducing Castle Baroque Players, a new amateur historical performance group from Leicestershire. They blend past and present by playing Baroque music on authentic 18th-century instruments with contemporary flair. Artistic Director Seb Carrington leads from the harpsichord, featuring works by Telemann, Byrd, and Corelli.
Cllr Mark Bools, Deputy Leader at the Borough Council said: “Music is not just a collection of sounds, it evokes emotion, memories and brings people together. I urge residents and visitors to visit, a lot of organisation has gone into this exhibition and there is something for everyone, young and old. I would also like to thank the individuals, local businesses and organisations for their contributions and for getting involved.”
In addition, as part of the exhibition visitors can access an Atkins Building public playlist available via Spotify featuring the music referenced by the artists and performers in the exhibition. For younger visitors there will be musical instruments and sound makers to play with plus activity sheets.
