New exhibition marks Second World War anniversaries

A new exhibition remembering the end of the Second World War is now open at the Atkins Gallery.

This year marks 80 years since the end of the Second World War, with Victory in Europe (VE) Day on 8 May 1945 and Victory over Japan (VJ) Day on 15 August 1945.

The exhibition, a collaboration between the Atkins Gallery and Hinckley & District Museum, commemorates both anniversaries. The exhibition focuses on the stories of local soldiers and all the different places across the globe WWII was fought, plus VE and VJ Day celebration images past and present.

All the items in the exhibition have been loaned by residents including a fantastic collection of British Army standard issue jackets, hats and equipment.  The largest object overlooking the whole exhibition is an original World War II White Naval Ensign flag.

Cllr Mark Bools, Deputy Leader of the Borough Council, said: "Having marked the 80th anniversaries of both VE and VJ Day, this exhibition is a fitting and fabulous conclusion to a truly historic year. I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone who supported it—especially our residents, who generously shared their precious mementos, photographs, and uniforms. I urge everyone to visit and take a moment to reflect on those who made it possible for us to live the lives we lead today.”

Atkins Gallery is open Monday to Friday, 9am until 5pm. There will be additional Saturday openings on 13 September (11:30am until 1:30pm) and 20 September (12:30pm until 1:30pm).

The exhibition is open until Friday 26 September.
