Hinckley students scoop prizes in Recycling Hero competition
Five Hinckley youngsters have been crowned Recycling Heroes after scooping prizes at a school competition.
Pupils at St Mary’s Church of England Primary School in Hinckley were asked to recycle one item – such as a plastic bottle, cardboard box or old newspaper – into a Recycle Hero character.
As well as making their heroes, they had to write an explanation of why it helps with recycling and bring their creations into school.
For their efforts, the winners were given £10 book vouchers as prizes.
The competition was judged by Executive Member for Parks and Open Spaces, Cllr Lynda Hodgkins, who crowned five winners across the school.
The winners were:
- Year 5: Ava Sutton
- Year 4: Odelia Bennett
- Year 3: Daisy Day
- Year 2: Olivia-Jayne Parker
- Foundation: Piper-Rose Harrison
Cllr Lynda Hodgkins, who judged the competition, said:
“It was so hard to pick the winners, and everyone should feel proud of themselves for taking part.
“It was great to see the school organise this competition as it’s so important to understand the importance of reduce, reuse and recycle at such a young age – and what better way to learn that by having fun and creating at the same time.”
Rachel Ayres, Headteacher, said:
“We were thrilled that we had so many entries from the children and delighted that the council were able to visit and judge the competition for us”.
Cllr Martin Cartwright, Executive Member for Climate Change and the Environment, said:
“Climate change is such a prominent issue that the Borough Council does a lot of important work on. It’s important that these pupils know not only that recycling is good, but how and why it helps the environment. Congratulations to all who took part.”
