Residents and visitors gathered in Hinckley on Saturday 27 June to show their support for the Armed Forces community at this year’s Armed Forces Day event.

Organised by the Borough Council in partnership with the Hinckley Combined Armed Forces and Veterans Community and Churches Together, the event brought together representatives from several regiments, nationalities, sections and services.

Now in its 18th year, Armed Forces Day continues to provide an opportunity to thank the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community, including currently serving troops, service families, veterans and cadets.

The day began with a procession departing from outside Jasper’s store on Castle Street, making its way to Argents Mead for a special service led by the Mayor’s Chaplain, Reverend Ian Hill. Following the service, the parade proceeded along Castle Street and Station Road, where a formal salute was taken by Mr Kevin Buchanan DL, representing the Lord-Lieutenant of Leicestershire.

Cllr Dawn Glenville, Armed Forces Champion at the Borough Council, said: "Armed Forces Day is an important opportunity both to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice and to celebrate the dedicated service given by our serving personnel, reservists and veterans. It is also a chance to recognise the wider Armed Forces community, including cadet forces, the families of servicemen and women, and civilian support personnel. It was wonderful to see so many people come together in the sunshine to show their support.”

Following the parade and service in Argents Mead younger visitors enjoyed a range of activities, including tomahawk throwing, as well as entertainment from stilt-walker Mr Biggles.

The Borough Council would like to thank everyone who attended the event and helped create such a positive and respectful atmosphere, with appreciation extended to all those who took part in the parade in such hot weather.
