THE popular Snap Dragon Children and Family Festival will be back for the ninth year running this summer with a week-long programme of activities taking place in Hinckley's Argents Mead and Hollycroft Park from Monday 5 August to Friday 9 August.

The free event, which is organised by the Borough Council, will take place daily from 11am to 3pm. Each day will feature a different theme and a selection of activities supported by the LCC Children and Family Wellbeing Service as well as sand play sponsored by Hinckley BID.

Monday 5 August is Seaside Fun Day in Argents Mead. Enjoy a traditional seaside day and party atmosphere with The Distractions performing at the grand opening event at 11am and 1pm. There will be beach and sand play, traditional peep boards, side shows, seaside crafts, creative play, traditional fair plus much more.

At the same time Hinckley and District Museum in Lower Bond Street will be hosting a Roman Day (suitable from age five upwards) from 11am to 3pm, featuring dressing up, writing, jewellery making and crafts on a Roman theme. Admission to the Roman day is £1 per person which includes museum entry.

Tuesday 6 August is Out of this World Day in Argents Mead. Children can let their imagination run wild with dinosaurs, space men, aliens and travel through the universe in the planetarium. There’s a chance to discover a world in space and become a star gazer, meet a giant T-Rex and cute baby dinosaurs. Or kids can become an explorer, look through a microscope and see what they can discover. There will also be barefoot yoga, a slime workshop, storytelling and plenty more to keep the whole family entertained.

Wednesday 7 August is National Play Day, the national celebration of a child’s right to play in Argents Mead. Back by popular demand this year is the water slide so a towel is advised; plus there will be dressing up, pavement art, a climbing wall, giant bubble blowing and youngsters can have a go at being a circus performer with the amazing circus party tent.

Thursday 8 August is Fairy Tale Fantasy in Argents Mead. Youngsters can have a ride on a magical unicorn, meet farm animals, customise a teddy (either bring your own or buy one for a small charge), decorate a gnome, create a wand and show off their best moves at the Snappy disco. There will also be a magical sandpit, fairy village, gnome trail and a musical workshop.

Friday 9 August is the Snap Dragon spectacular at Hollycroft Park in Hinckley where everyone can enjoy this year’s Young People’s Festival showcasing talent from across Hinckley and Bosworth. Visitors are encouraged to bring a picnic and enjoy the festival atmosphere. Enjoy lots of play activities, pavement art, giant bubbles, photo booth and performances from Shelby Academy of Performing Arts. Youngsters can make a fabulous outfit for the children’s fashion show, join in the karaoke and have lots of fun on the final day of events.

I’m really proud to support the Snap Dragon Festival once again this year. This popular event offers many fantastic opportunities for children, young people, families and friends to come together and have a great time, trying new things and having lots of fun. I hope that as many people as possible can join us at these events and have a fantastic time.

In addition, there are a range of mini Snap Dragon events delivered in partnership with a range of local organisations. These range from free squash taster sessions and trampolining to baking, face painting and crafts.
