National Apprenticeship Week: Meet Blaine

Published Friday, 31 January 2020

Different apprenticeships are available all over the country, at companies large and small, in a wide range of industries and organisations. From local organisations to large national brands.

You get valuable hands-on experience working whilst you learn, which helps you progress in your working life.

Meet Blaine, 25, from Whitwick, who has recently completed his apprenticeship with a Diploma in Work-based Horticulture (Landscaping).

“Since leaving school I have always worked in the gardening, landscaping industry but before I joined HBBC I had always been on agency contracts; getting a job here meant I got a permanent job. I originally started working with the Parks team but I got the opportunity to move to the Arboriculture team and as part of my transfer I was offered the prospect to train as an apprentice and attend college once a week and work towards a qualification.

“I have been able to combine my ‘day job’ which is traditional tree surgery, pruning, cutting trees and some landscaping along with any college work really well and my manager has always been supportive and on hand if I have needed any help.

“I would definitely recommend becoming an apprentice, you gain hands-on experience, a qualification and you are earning. Since completing my apprenticeship I have become more knowledgeable and it has given me the confidence to complete jobs on my own, I hope to undertake further training in the future.”
