Council website ranked top three for accessibility

The Borough Council’s website has been ranked one of the top three council websites in the UK for accessibility.

The website was ranked third overall out of more than 400 councils whose sites were audited as part of the Silktide index, a public list of websites graded by accessibility.

Silktide, in partnership with SOCITM (Society for innovation, technology and modernisation), ranks the accessibility of council websites each month, by checking 200 key criteria across 125 pages on each council site. The Borough Council’s site achieved a score of 98 out of a possible 100, making it the top performing site for accessibility in Leicestershire and third best in the UK.

Accessibility is essential not only so that everyone can access information, but also to comply with new legislation which requires all public service websites meet certain accessibility standards.

The council’s website has become an increasingly popular way for residents to access services and information at a time that suits them in recent years. During the coronavirus pandemic, more customers have relied on the website than ever before. Between March and July this year, more than one million visits were made to the council’s website, which is more than double the number made in the same time period in 2019.

The council is constantly monitoring and improving the accessibility and usability of its website, using customer feedback to guide improvements, publishing information in plain English and ensuring any downloadable documents are as accessible as possible.

Council Leader Stuart Bray said:

I’d like to thank everyone involved in this remarkable achievement, it’s great to see the impact of the council’s focus on making the website as accessible as possible.  The council has been working hard to ensure people can easily access the information they need and to request services and its popularity speaks for itself with more than one million visits between March and July this year, twice as many as the same time last year.

We are determined to continue improving the website, responding to customer feedback and ensuring it is accessible and usable for everyone.
