About European parliamentary elections

All European states are divided into regions. Each region elects a set number of Members of European Parliament (MEPs) for the parliament. The UK is divided up into 12 regions and each region has between three and 11 MEPs. The UK elects a total of 78 MEPs.

Hinckley and Bosworth is located within the East Midlands Region, which elects five MEPs for the region.

The European Parliamentary seats are allocated on a proportional representation basis. European Parliamentary elections take place every five years. The last European Parliamentary election was held on 22 May 2014. The next one is scheduled to take place in May 2019.
