Greenhouse gas emissions summary report

Summary of report

Change in emissions

Our reported net greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions increased during 1 April 2018 to 31 March 2019 by 8.3% against 2017 to 2018 to 2,082TCO (tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent) and decreased by 38.2% (gross) against our base line year of 2009 to 2010. This is mainly due to significantly increased fuel based emissions from bringing the dry recycling service in house and possible under reporting by the previous contractor. Emissions from gas and electricity by the new Hinckley Leisure Centre, along with the rest of the building portfolio, continue to reduce overall. Employee business travel emissions decreased by 6.9% with a significant shift from small diesel to small petrol and to medium diesel mileage.

Green tariffs

We purchased 0.64GkWh (kilowatts) of green electricity under contract to Total Gas & Power, equating to a reduction of 182TCO2e. This is 100% of grid electricity purchased. The Hinckley Leisure Centre generated 0.58GkWh from gas powered combined heat and power, displacing a notational 165TCO2e. The photovoltaic panels on the Hinckley Hub generated 31,978kWh during the year, thereby reducing our gross emissions by 9TCO2e as this reduced demand from the grid and was not exported, this is not claimed in the net emissions figure.

Greenhouse gases reported

The greenhouse gas emissions reported in this document include not only CO2 but also methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) equivalents, as set out by Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) and Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) guidelines.

Units are represented as tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) equivalents (TCO2e).
