Foster carers and people who work in the armed forces

Approved or prospective adoptive parents

People who are going through the approval process to become adoptive parents will not get the additional room under the size criteria until the child forms part of the household.

Where a child is placed with a claimant prior to an adoption order being made, that child is treated as a foster child until the adoption is approved. This means that the parents will be allowed an extra room under the local housing allowance scheme or the under occupancy scheme, but their personal allowance will not increase until the child is legally adopted.
