How to apply for a private hire operator licence
Private hire operator requirements
Insurance
A certificate of public liability insurance is required only if the public can come on to your premises, for example to sit in a waiting room. However, where no public access or waiting facilities are provided or if you wish to operate your own vehicle from home, this insurance is not necessary.
Licensed vehicles and drivers
As a private hire operator, you may have several drivers working from your base at any one time. So you can make sure that these drivers are correctly licensed, you must keep a copy of each of the following for each driver and vehicle operating under your operator's licence:
- The current private hire driver's licence
- The current private hire vehicle licence
- The valid certificate of insurance for the vehicle
- The current MOT certificate
You should also note the following:
- Vehicle licence fees are charged for each vehicle annually
- Driver licence fees are charged for each driver every three years
- The current vehicle plate contains information relating to the year, colour and make of the vehicle
- All private hire vehicles must be insured
