Green Wedges
Overview
Areas of Green Wedge primarily seek to guide the development form of urban areas. The presence of the green wedge helps to maintain settlement identity whilst providing green infrastructure links between settlements.
Methodology and consistency with the NPPF
The Green Wedge is a strategic designation which crosses administrative boundaries and so a Leicester and Leicestershire Green Wedge Review Joint Methodology was prepared in 2011 so that a consistent approach could be taken and is still used. The Methodology was agreed by the following six local authorities Charnwood (CBC), Harborough (HDC), Hinckley and Bosworth (HBBC), Leicester City (LCC), North West Leicestershire (NWLDC) and Oadby and Wigston (OWBC). Blaby District Council (BDC) and Melton Borough Council (MBC) are part of the Leicestershire Housing Market Area but were not part of the joint methodology. Melton Borough Council do not have any green wedges within their administrative boundaries. View this methodology below:
Officers within Leicester and Leicestershire worked jointly to prepare a statement on the consistency of the green wedge designation with the revised National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF). This consistency statement can be viewed below:
Green Wedges in Hinckley and Bosworth
There are two green wedges within the borough, the Hinckley/Barwell/Earl Shilton/Burbage Green Wedge and the Rothley Brook Meadows Green Wedge.
Hinckley/Barwell/Earl Shilton/Burbage Green Wedge
The Hinckley/Barwell/Earl Shilton/Burbage Green Wedge Review was published in April 2020. The purpose of the review was to assess the functionality of the Hinckley/Barwell/Earl Shilton/Burbage Green Wedge to identify whether revisions to the boundary are required through the Local Plan Review.
A further Hinckley/Barwell/Earl Shilton/Burbage Green Wedge Review was published in 2026.
Rothley Brook Meadow Green Wedge
The Rothley Brook Meadow Green Wedge was published in September 2020. The aim of the review was to assess the functionality of the Rothley Brook Green Wedge to identify whether revisions to the boundary are required through the Local Plan Review.
A further Rothley Brook Meadow Green Wedge Review was published in 2025.

An addendum has been prepared to accompany the Rothley Brook Meadow Green Wedge Review (October 2025) and the Hinckley/Barwell/Earl Shilton/Burbage Green Wedge Review (2026), both of which form part of the evidence base for the emerging Local Plan (2024–2045). View the Addendum (2026) below:
