Annual canvass - keeping the electoral register up to date
Your annual canvass letter will arrive soon. We must canvass every property in the area annually to check that the information on the electoral register is up to date.
The way we complete our annual canvass has changed
Your letter will look different to the forms you have received before. Please read the letter carefully to see if you need to respond. If you do not respond when you need to, you will receive a reminder and could receive a personal visit from us.
We will send the letter to you by email if we believe that there has not been a change to your household in the last 12 months and you have previously provided your email address.
How to respond
The way you respond will depend on the way we have sent the letter to you.
If you receive an email
- Click on the link in the email
- Type in your security codes
- Complete the information and submit the online form (you will be able to tell us about any changes to your household)
If you don’t respond to this email, we will be required to send you a letter by post.
If you receive a letter
Read your letter carefully to see if you need to respond.
If you are required to respond, or you need to update the information on the letter, you can respond in one of three ways:
- Online: Complete annual canvass form (householdresponse.com)
- By text: To confirm no changes text 'nochanges' and your security codes (for example: nochanges 123456 12345678) to 80212. Please note that you will be charged for this service
- By phone: To confirm no changes call: 0800 197 9871
If you don’t respond to the letter when required, by law we must continue contacting you for a response. This could mean receiving a phone call from one of our team (from mid-September) or a visit on your doorstep (from mid-October). If you want to avoid any further reminders, you should respond to the letter as soon as possible.
The annual canvass letter is not a registration form. Any new residents will be sent an additional form to complete. All new residents will need to provide their national insurance number and date of birth. You can complete this online, visit register to vote (GOV.UK) or return the form we send.
Questions about our annual canvass
I haven’t got a prepaid envelope to return the letter
Changes can be made by responding online, by text or by phone. These are more cost and time efficient. If you respond using one of these methods, you do not need to send the paper letter back. If you are required to respond and you are not able to respond by any of these methods we will send out a full canvass form with a prepaid envelope in a few weeks.
If you still need assistance, you can complete our elections contact form or call us on 01455 238141.
I’ve had a phone call asking about my household is this a scam?
From mid-September, our elections team will be calling households who have not yet responded to their letter or their reminder. We are doing this to reduce the number of doorstep visits that our team will need to make later in the year. If you do not want to receive a phone call from our team, you should respond to the letter (where required) as soon as possible.
If you are unsure if you are speaking to a member of our team, but would still like to respond over the phone, you can call us on 01455 238141.
I’ve responded to the letter am I registered now?
If your name was pre-printed on the letter then you are already registered to vote. If you had to add your name to the property online or had to write your name on the form then you are not registered to vote yet. We will need more information in order to verify your identity and add you to the electoral register.
After your response to the annual canvass has been processed, any new residents will be sent an invitation to register form to complete. This form will be sent to you by email or post. To complete this form you will need to provide your National Insurance number and date of birth. Alternatively, you can complete this online at any time, visit register to vote (GOV.UK)
