Food business registrations

Registration summary

To store, prepare, distribute or sell food on premises your business needs to be registered with us at least 28 days in advance. 

Premises include:

  • Restaurants
  • Cafés
  • Hotels
  • Shops
  • Canteens
  • Market stalls
  • Mobile catering vans
  • Food delivery vans
  • Home caterers 

Once you have your business registered, an officer from the Food Safety Team will visit you and if your business is eligible, you will be awarded with a food hygiene rating.  

Some manufacturers handling products of animal origin may need to be approved by the Food Standards Agency (who are responsible for meat inspection duties) rather than registered. Get approval for a food business premises
