A5 Partnership
Welcome to the A5 Partnership
The A5 Partnership is made up of 16 local councils supported by other public agencies along a 77-mile stretch from Gailey in Staffordshire, to Stoney Stratford near Milton Keynes (via Leicestershire, Warwickshire and Northamptonshire).
It is supported by Highways England, four Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs), Midlands Connect, East Midlands Councils and Homes England.
Objectives
The four key objectives of the partnership are to:
- Raise awareness of the importance of the increasing economic role of the A5 through the Midlands
- Collaborate and effectively plan for growth impacts affecting the A5
- Make the case for future investment on improvements to tackle key congestion issues
- Develop a strategy for the A5 around these principles
Background
The A5 is a strategic east-west corridor linking a number of towns and cities across the heart of England. It is a single carriageway road which is subject to frequent delays and accidents. Historically, the A5 has provided a long-distance strategic route between London and Holyhead through large parts of southern and central England.
Whilst this role has diminished to more of a distributor route with the opening of the M1, M6 and M6 toll, the corridor remains a key artery of economic activity and growth. In recent years, there has been a growing concern from local councils in the East and West Midlands regarding the performance and future role of the A5. This has led to the formation of the A5 Partnership. The A5 Partnership has been working with Highways England, Homes England and more recently Midlands Connect, to influence strategic investment decisions for improving this increasingly important corridor. The partnership has also engaged with key businesses along the corridor and MPs representing the constituencies that straddle the A5.
The partnership has secured their collective support in seeking to lobby for improvements.
