Transfer of a Hackney carriage or private hire vehicle

Guidance notes

Please read these guidance notes carefully before making your application.

Applications must be completed in full and accompanied by the licence transfer fee of £90. The replacement vehicle must be less than six years old from date of first registration with DVLA.

What you must provide

When applying for a licence you must provide your completed and signed application form (by both the previous owner and yourself), along with these original documents:

  • Either the vehicle log book or (known as the V5C) or a valid proof of purchase from the person you bought the vehicle from. This will be accepted temporarily until you have received your new log book, when it must be brought to the council offices at Hinckley Hub so that it can be shown to Licensing within four weeks
  • A current insurance policy or cover note which must have a minimum of 14 days cover
  • If the vehicle is more than one year old, a valid MOT pass certificate from a test centre within our borough. The only exception to this is if you bought the vehicle with an existing MOT certificate. You must book and pay for any MOT test yourself

Accidents

Any accident involving a hackney carriage/private hire vehicle causing damage materially affecting the vehicle's safety, performance or appearance, or the comfort or convenience of its passengers and driver must be reported within 72 hours to Hinckley & Bosworth Borough Council under s50 (3) LGMPA 1976. If you have had an accident and the licence is transferred onto a hire vehicle while your vehicle is being repaired you will have to reverse this process once your vehicle is fixed to ensure that it is ‘fit for purpose’ to be relicensed.

Report an accident to your licensed vehicle

Alternatively, we can send you an accident form: Licensing contact form
