Preventing falls

On the same level

Each room of the house should have sufficient space for you and any other household member to move around and carry out day-to-day tasks without obstructions or increasing the risk of a slip.

Paths and floors should be even, free of surface water, in good condition and slip resistant. All floor coverings should be securely fitted.

There should be appropriate natural and artificial light, without glare or flicker, both internally and externally to light dark walk ways and paths and dark corners of the home.

In communal areas of multi-occupied buildings, the owner or manager is usually responsible for the floor coverings. There should be sufficient drainage for surface water from external paths and any yard space.
