Fire safety, flames and hot surfaces

Preventing fires

Ensure that there is adequate protection against contact with hot pipes, surfaces, steam and live flames. This is particularly important where there are children or elderly people in the household.

Preventing fires is important and below are a few of the things that you should check regularly:

  • Ensure that electrical sockets are not overloaded, there are no exposed wires and unplug appliances at night where possible
  • Check that cigarettes and other heat sources are fully extinguished or turned off. For example, hair straighteners
  • Do not store combustible materials in the property or in communal areas
  • Shut internal doors at night to prevent fires from spreading
