Your new food waste recycling collection service

About the food waste collection service

From February/March 2026, we will be introducing a new weekly food waste recycling collection. We will collect your food waste weekly on the same day as we collect your other waste and recycling. This new service is mandatory and is fully funded by the government.

You can learn more on this video: food waste - how is it recycled (youtube.com)

Around half of councils in the UK already run food waste collections successfully, and all areas in England will have a collection shortly.

We will provide you with:

  • A kitchen caddy
  • A starter roll of liners to line the caddy
  • An outside food waste caddy which we will empty weekly (this is a similar size to a bucket)
  • Full instructions on what can and cannot be recycled and how to maximise the benefits from this new service
  • Caddies will be delivered to you – nearer the time we will let you know when this will happen

Why recycle your food waste?

  • Your household bin will be cleaner and less full as we will provide you with a weekly collection
  • The new recycling service gives you the opportunity to recycle more
  • Food waste that is recycled also has many uses. It can be converted into fertilisers for agriculture or converted into natural forms of energy which are a good alternative to fossil fuels
  • As food waste is 70% water, sending food waste for incineration (as currently happens in Hinckley and Bosworth), requires more energy to burn so recycling is a more efficient method of disposal

What happens to the food waste once collected?

When recycled, food waste can be turned into something useful. Your food waste is taken to an anerobic digestion facility near Atherstone where it is used to generate natural energy known as biogas, an excellent alternative to fossil fuels, and a fertiliser which can be used in farming.
