Food waste FAQs

I have an assisted collection. Will my food waste bin be collected and returned like my other bins?

Yes. Our crews will deliver your caddies to your agreed collection point. Once collections start, they will empty and return the food waste caddy for you. If you have difficulty presenting your bins and are currently not getting an assisted collection, please visit help with collections

I live in a flat /have a communal bin store. What containers will be provided?

We will give you a caddy for inside your kitchen and we will provide shared wheeled bins for the food waste in your bin store area. We will be writing to all property management companies/landlords shortly to make these arrangements. For more information go to flats and apartments. Issues with bin stores should be reported to your landlord in the first instance

When will collections start?

We will provide details nearer the time. Caddy deliveries are over a six-week period in February and March 2026 and collections will start one to two weeks after the caddies are delivered. Your start date will depend on where you live, but all collections will start during March 2026. To receive up-to-date food waste information, please sign up for our email updates

How can I check my collection date?

You can check your collection dates online at:

Food waste collections will show on this calendar from late February 2026.

Will the food waste be collected in the same vehicle as refuse?

No. We have new specialist vehicles to collect the food waste. These are smaller than our normal trucks.

What items will you accept for food waste collection?

We will collect any and all of the following:

  • Uneaten food/plate scrapings
  • Raw meat, cooked meat and bones
  • Fish - cooked fish and bones
  • Dairy products, cheese and eggs
  • Tea bags and coffee grounds
  • Rice, pasta and beans
  • Bread, cakes and pastries
  • Raw vegetables, cooked vegetables, whole fruit and peelings
  • Your mouldy and out-of-date food, including ready meals removed from their packaging
  • Pet food

What if there is a mess on the street after collection?

We ask residents to make sure that on presentation of the container, the handle is in the locked position. This way, even if the bin is blown over, the contents will not escape. If there has been a spillage on your road, you will be able to report this to us online.
