When we use your personal data, Hinckley & Bosworth Borough Council is what is known as the ‘data controller’. We have a data protection officer who makes sure that we respect your rights and follow the law.
It is our duty to keep your records safe and accurate, to only use your data where we need to provide a service and to only keep your records for as long as we have to.
What is personal data?
Personal data is information which relates to a living person who can be identified from the information itself, or by linking it with other information. For example; it could be your name and address, your own council tax information or your housing record.
Some personal information is ‘special’ and needs more protection due to its sensitivity. This is often information that is very personal to you and you may not want widely known. This could include things such as your religious or philosophical beliefs, your sexuality, ethnicity, criminal or medical history and political beliefs.
How do we use your personal information?
‘Processing’ is the terms used whenever we ‘do’ anything with your personal data. This is usually to provide a service to you, to monitor how we manage those services or just to get in touch. There are a number of legal reasons why we need to collect and process your information.
Generally, we collect and use your personal data where you or your legal representative(s) have given consent and it is necessary to perform our statutory duties.
Sometimes we have to share your personal data
If we use your personal information for research, we will always keep you informed. We will always keep you anonymous or use a different name, unless you agree that your information can be used for that research. We don’t sell your information to anyone else.
Occasionally, we may share your information between council services in order to keep our records as up to date as possible. However, council staff can only see your personal information if they ned it to do their job.
